Youth at Risk has developed a series of professional training programs for volunteer mentors, public school teachers and professional staff in a variety of settings including community-based organizations, schools, foster homes and housing shelters. Current training programs include:

Mentorship

An integral part of all Youth at Risk programs is the Committed Partner Mentor (CPM). The CPM work with youth on a one-on-one basis to develop a relationship that supports their personal, professional and academic goals. He/she helps participants identify needs, declare reasonable goals and create timelines for achieving them. All CMPs undergo a comprehensive training program including 65 hours of training, ongoing coaching and evaluation (by a Committed Partner Mentor Coach), and follow-up training to equip them with strategies to reach at-risk youth and to make a positive impact on participants’lives.

Commited Partner Mentor candidates are preferrably 21 years or older, have a college degree and be currently employed by the same organization for at least three years. The employment history requirement ensures that CMPs are committed for the “long haul” and not just the initial “thrill” of being a mentor.

The Teacher Training Program

A12-week course for educators of youth who display frequent disruptive behavior, declining academic proficiency and truancy. Using our “Curriculum for Possibilities,” training sessions focus on classroom management and the teacher / student relationship as a partnership. This program is part of continuing education for NYC public school teachers and is supported by the United Federation of Teachers and as a graduate course at City College. Customized Staff Development

Youth at Risk creates Customized Staff Development programs tailored to match school personnel needs. Generally, four phases are followed as a basis of design totaling 35 hours:

  1. Listen and assess the needs, concerns and vision of the members. Observe departmental/staff meetings. Conference with key individuals to create a team that will address the team's agenda. Establish project "buy-in" with key players in leadership and management positions. (8 hours)
  2. Have a Communication Retreat to create an environment to heal past wounds, and establish the foundation and practices for partnership. (17 hours)
  3. Hold project meetings and connect with coaching calls to provide support to members to continue new practices. (10 hours)
